The Japanese Type 99 Arisaka rifle, introduced in 1939, was a prominent bolt-action rifle used by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Designed to replace the earlier Type 38 Arisaka, the Type 99 was chambered for the 7.7×58mm Arisaka cartridge, which was a more powerful round compared to its predecessor. The rifle features a robust, yet relatively lightweight design, with a distinctive curved bolt handle and a built-in monopod for improved stability when firing from a prone position. Its construction includes a wooden stock, and later versions incorporated a protective muzzle brake to help reduce recoil and improve accuracy. The Type 99 was produced in several variants, including standard infantry models, sniper versions equipped with telescopic sights, and shorter carbine models for specialized roles. This specific rifle for sale has been sporterized; the original stock has been replaced with a smooth hardwood stock and ergonomic monte carlo-style cheek piece for enhanced comfort and accuracy, and the original rear sights have been replaced in favor of an adjustable peep sight. 

Despite its reliability and durability, the Type 99 faced some criticisms, particularly regarding its accuracy and the use of less refined materials toward the end of the war, due to resource shortages. The rifle's design was intended to be both effective and economical, incorporating features such as a fixed, internal magazine and a simple rear sight system. While it was a significant improvement over previous Japanese rifles in terms of firepower, the Type 99's performance was often compared unfavorably to the more advanced rifles of other nations.
