USS FALL RIVER CA-124 memorial naval first day cover with postmark on Jan 27, 2019 from Kansas City, MO. Blue printed photo of actual ship on cachet #8992 by Alvin Eckert #9964 USCS. This 674 foot heavy cruiser arrived very late in World War II and was the flagship for the Operation Crossroads atom bomb test target fleet in 1946. She made one Far East cruise in 1947 and the ship was decommissioned on October 31, 1947. She was in reserve for many years and became obsolete as guided missile weapons were selected for capital warships.Thus she was sent to the scrap yard in 1972. Cover franked with a 55 cent Flag stamp (FDOI) and a 3 cent USN stamp from 1946. Unfortunately, only the bow of the ship could be displayed at the Battleship Cove Museum in Fall River, Mass.
